Since launching MATH Venture Partners in 2014, local tech veteran Mark Achler has made more than a dozen investments totaling $4.5 million through his early-stage startup fund. He’s the MA; the TH is Troy Henikoff.
Among MATH’s investments are ThinkCerca, which uses technology to improve students’ reading and writing; health analytics company Apervita; and mobile security firm NowSecure.
“We look for companies who in their core DNA understand sales, first and foremost,” Achler told Blue Sky. “Secondly, it’s really, really hard to teach a customer new behavior. We’re looking for better mousetraps, not new inventions.”
A former Redbox executive, Achler is an experienced entrepreneur who co-founded several companies and in 1997 helped launch venture firm Kettle Partners. Among Kettle’s investments were SurePayroll and MusicNow, which was acquired by AOL in 2005.
He teaches entrepreneurship at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Business. Achler has a bachelor’s degree in social studies education from Purdue University.
