Jennifer Fried is co-founder and CEO of Explorer Surgical, which makes software that serves as a “digital playbook” for surgical teams. In 2016, Fried launched the River North-based company to customize the setup, staffing and procedures for each operation and to improve the accuracy and efficiency of equipment. It also lets administrators track real-time progress in operating rooms and manage staff changes during procedures.
“If you take two surgeons that are doing the same surgical procedure in rooms next to each other, it can look really different,” Fried told Blue Sky in 2016. “They have different ways they want their rooms set up, they have different clinical ways of how they approach the case based on the way they were trained, and then they’re using different tools — there are thousands to choose from.”
The former Bain management consultant and health care venture capitalist began the company in 2013 while she was earning an MBA from University of Chicago Booth School of Business. In 2015, the startup took second place in the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation’s New Venture Challenge.
In August 2017, the company raised $3 million in Series A financing that brought total funding to more than $4.5 million. It also has added medical device manufacturers to its client base. Currently in an undisclosed number of U.S. hospitals and clinics, the company hopes to expand internationally.
