Steven Miller is co-founder of Origin Ventures, a Series A-stage venture capital firm that has invested in the likes of Tock, Tovala and Avant.
It was an early investor in Grubhub, exiting when the company went public in 2014.
“That makes me most proud from a business standpoint,” Miller said. “By extension, we were very, very early investors in the Chicago technology ecosystem. Seeing what it has blossomed into, that’s very gratifying.”
Before starting Origin Ventures, Miller spent 10 years at Quill Corp., his family’s office supply firm, where he ran the Canadian distribution center before starting the company’s e-commerce program. The family sold the business to Staples in 1998.
Miller also was an investor in Golf.com before its 2006 acquisition by Time Inc.
Among his numerous civic engagements, Miller is president of the board of Victory Gardens Theater and vice chair of the Better Government Association.
Miller, who has a B.S. in business administration/marketing from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, provides funding for the Steven N. Miller Entrepreneurial Scholarships and the Diane N. & Steven N. Miller Centennial Chair in Business at the University of Illinois.
