Eileen Murphy Buckley is CEO of ThinkCerca, a literacy and critical-thinking software platform she founded in 2012.
She taught English for 15 years and was the founding English department chair at Walter Payton College Prep before becoming director of curriculum and instruction for more than 100 Chicago schools. That’s when she became passionate about the ability to make persuasive arguments, pegging it the key to success.
“To make something that is really complex — and more of a vision than a real thing — simple enough for someone else to understand and believe in is probably the first big hurdle an entrepreneur has to address,” Murphy Buckley told Blue Sky in 2014.
The platform she developed with other educators and academics helps teach students to make rational, well-reasoned arguments. School systems in more than 130 countries use the software.
ThinkCerca raised $3.2 million in a Series A round in 2015 and $10.1 million in a Series B round in September 2017.
In January 2018, ThinkCerca began offering products for college students on top of its original K-12 offerings.
Murphy Buckley earned a teaching certificate in English/language arts from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a Master of Arts degree in writing from DePaul University. She lives in Chicago with her husband and four children, all Chicago Public Schools students.
