Bill Ready is chief operating officer of Paypal and former CEO of Braintree, a payments processing company acquired by PayPal in 2013 in one of the larger exits in Chicago’s startup community.

Ready continues to lead Braintree, which operates as a separate service within PayPal. He has worked to highlight the ways PayPal is supporting the company’s goal to give startups, entrepreneurs and innovators tools to fuel their success. For example, in late 2012, Ready introduced a program that allowed 1,000 startups to process $50,000 worth of payments at no charge.

Today, PayPal is helping Braintree offer that same benefit to any new startup on its platform.

“You have to deliver tangibly on campaign promises pretty early on,” Ready said. After an acquisition, early achievements can prove the deal’s value to employees and customers alike.

Braintree’s clients include LivingSocial, OpenTable, GitHub, Airbnb and HotelTonight.

Before joining Braintree in 2011, Ready was executive in residence at Accel Partners, a Silicon Valley venture capital and growth equity firm. He also served as president of iPay Technologies.

Ready also worked as a strategy consultant for McKinsey, where he advised leading financial technology companies, and was an early engineer at two other successful startups: Emphesys and Netzee.

He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a bachelor’s degree in information systems and finance from the University of Louisville.
